Depression
Techniques targeting low mood, withdrawal, and loss of activity.
Low mood is treated most directly by changing behavior first, not by waiting for motivation to return. Motivation tends to follow action, not precede it.
The Withdrawal Cycle
Depression narrows activity. Tasks that used to feel worthwhile start to feel pointless, so they get skipped. Skipping removes a source of accomplishment or connection, which lowers mood further, a cycle that is easy to miss from the inside because each individual skip feels minor.
| Stage | What happens | Effect on mood |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Low energy or low interest | Neutral |
| Avoidance | A planned or routine activity gets skipped | Short-term relief |
| Consequence | Fewer sources of accomplishment or connection | Mood drops further |
| Repetition | The next activity feels even less worth attempting | Cycle deepens |
The Corrective Technique
Behavioral Activation breaks the cycle at the avoidance stage. Rather than requiring motivation as a precondition, it schedules one small, specific, low-effort action, independent of how much anyone feels like doing it, and treats the resulting mood shift as the outcome, not the input.
Three properties make an activity a good starting point: specific ("a ten-minute walk at 5pm," not "get more exercise"), low-effort (small enough that skipping it has no good excuse), and previously valued (something that mattered before mood dropped, even if it currently feels pointless).
Next Steps
Pick one activity that fits all three properties above and schedule it for today, not "sometime this week." Behavioral Activation works through repetition. One action rarely changes mood on its own, but a week of small, completed actions reliably does.
All techniques for depression

Behavioral Activation
Rebuild engagement with valued, reinforcing activities to lift depressed mood.

Values Clarification
Identify what genuinely matters across life domains, to guide action instead of relying on mood or motivation.

Committed Action
Translate a clarified value into a concrete, workable behavior plan, and keep recommitting when it slips.
